St. Michaels Church: |
|
bricks made by slaves, the
architectural
style
of St. Michael Church is a
mixture of Ionic and Romanesque.
The main altar was imported from
France in 1868. The church is
filled with antiques: the huge
1873 Redemptorist Mission
Crucifix, the 1857 pipe organ,
huge Munich art glass windows,
priceless framed oil paintings,
and many large and small
statues. The Grotto behind
the main altar is made of
bagasse clinkers. It was
dedicated in 1876 and is the
first of its kind in the United
States. St. Michaels the
Archangel is the first Marist
foundation in the United States.
Since 1863 the Marists have
provided services to the people
of this community. |

added in 1875, was destroyed by
Hurricane Betsy in 1965 and was
never restored. Constructed of red |
